What is a Conversation?

A conversation is two minds trying to understand each other.

At first, that sounds simple.
But underneath that simple interaction, your brain is performing one of the most complex tasks humans can do.
Every conversation has four steps:

  • Someone has an intention.

  • They express it.

Today, computers are beginning to understand more natural forms of communication:

  • Speaking

  • Listening

  • Emotion (to a limited extent)

  • Pauses and silence

  • Interruptions

What happens when someone speaks?

To understand conversational AI, we first need to understand how humans communicate.


Stephen C. Levinson & Francisco Torreira's research on conversational turn-taking has found that the average gap between one person finishing a sentence and another beginning to speak is around 200 milliseconds (0.2 seconds).

This is so fast that your brain begins planning a response before the other person has finished speaking.


This process feels effortless, but it involves multiple brain systems working together almost simultaneously-

  • Detect sound.

  • Recognizes speech.

  • Identify words.

  • Understand the meaning.

  • Connect it with context.

  • Decide what to do.

  • Plan a response.

  • Speak.


All within fraction of a second.


Words aren't the whole conversation

Your brain also interprets:

  • Tone

  • Pitch

  • Volume

  • Speaking speed

  • Pauses

  • Emphasis

  • Facial expressions

  • Emotion

These signals help us understand confidence, uncertainty, excitement, sarcasm, frustration, and many other emotions that words alone cannot convey.
